7 Food Hacks to Eat Clean on a Budget

Many people in the Fitness22 community have been asking us, “How can we eat cleaner and actually make it affordable?” First of all, we need to understand what exactly clean eating is. In the simplest terms, clean eating is about intaking whole foods, those that are as close to their natural form as possible and remain unprocessed, refined, and handled. A healthy or clean diet should heavily consist of vegetables, nuts and fruits. An unhealthy diet, on the other hand, is rich in processed foods and meat.

 

Read these our 7 food hacks to help you eat clean, save money and live a healthier lifestyle.

  1. Know When to Go Organic – Organic foods come with hefty price tags. There have been recent studies made showing that the organic produce we are purchasing may not necessarily be healthier for you anyhow. So, do your research beforehand and find out which organic foods aren’t worth the splurge and which non-organic foods are safest to eat.

  2. Buy Local and In-Season – Get to your local farmer’s market and look for produce that is in-season. Not only will this save you tons of cash but buying your fruits and veggies during their peak season will help you maintain a healthier lifestyle.

  3. Avoid “Superfoods” – To eat clean doesn’t mean you need to consume the latest in food trends. Don’t get me wrong, some superfoods do have their health benefits but you can also eat a wholesome diet without breaking the bank.

  4. Skip Buying Pre-Made Foods – Sure we have only so many hours in a day, but packaged food items come with a high price tag. Try cutting up your fruits and veggies for the week the minute you get home with your groceries.

  5. Decrease Your Meat Intake  – According to the USDA, over the past 50 years, Americans have upped their meat intake by 57 pounds. Why doesn’t this come as a surprise? The cost of meat can really take a hit on your wallet, especially if you are incorporating it into all three of your daily meals. Try limiting your meat intake to one meal a day and try incorporating other high-protein foods like Quinoa or nuts.

  6. It’s All About Portion Control – Try keeping a healthy balance of the amount and types foods you digest.  A proper portion can be comparable to a hand-size. Aim for using smaller plates to help you maintain a healthy serving size during your next meal.

  7. Buy in Bulk – Go to your local bulk store and stock up on healthy nuts, seeds, grains and even expensive flours. These items when bought in bulk or even online can significantly cut down your costs. Not only will it save you large sums of cash, but it allows you to maintain healthy portions and only buy the amounts that you need.

Remember, the easiest way to stay on track and save money is to plan and prepare your meals ahead of time. Planning your meals at the start of the week, this will help you avoid buying on impulse and only buy foods that are needed to get you through your week. Oh and one more thing, don’t be afraid to make leftovers your friend if you want to stretch your dollar even further!
